ALBANY – In partnership with Fulton County Civil Defense & Fire and the Gloversville and Johnstown Fire Departments, the American Red Cross will launch its Home Fire Preparedness Campaign in Fulton County later this month.
Last October, the Red Cross announced a nationwide campaign to reduce deaths and injuries from home fires by as much as 25 percent over the next five years. Since then, Red Cross workers and community partners have visited hundreds of homes across the Eastern New York Region to deliver critical fire safety information and install free smoke alarms for residents in need.
“Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of someone dying in a home fire in half,” said Angelika Klapputh, Disaster Program Manager for the American Red Cross. “We’re working closely with local partners including Fulton County Civil Defense Director and Fire Coordinator Steven Santa Maria to get this message out there and install free smoke alarms where we know there are people who need them.”
“The Fulton County Civil Defense and Fire Coordinator’s Office, along with the Gloversville and Johnstown Fire Departments, realize that properly installed and maintained smoke alarms save lives,” said Steven Santa Maria. “The Red Cross has provided a great opportunity for Fulton County residents to have smoke alarms installed free of charge in their homes. We are encouraging our residents to take advantage of this opportunity by contacting the Red Cross by phone or online.”
The Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign will launch in Fulton County on Saturday, July 25. The Gloversville and Johnstown Fire Departments will support the initial stages of this campaign, joining forces with Red Cross volunteers to install smoke alarms and promote fire safety in their communities. Santa Maria also explained that “while the program is being piloted in the Cities of Gloversville and Johnstown, it is available to all County residents with assistance from participating local Fire Departments.”
