Inaugural Nonprofit Conference Set for September 20th in Canton

CANTON – An afternoon training for nonprofit leaders and board members will be held on Wednesday, September 20 at the Best Western University Inn in Canton. The inaugural event, presented by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, will take place from 2:00 to 5:30pm.
The conference will include a welcome by Northern New York Community Foundation and open with an overview of trends in the nonprofit industry, presented by Doug Sauer, CEO of the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc (NYCON). NYCON is the state’s association of nonprofits and has a rapidly growing membership of almost 3,000 organizations. Under Doug’s leadership, NYCON has emerged as a nationally recognized leader in building innovative partnership initiatives with state government, foundations and United Ways with respect to board governance, mergers and restructuring, entrepreneurial ventures, and legal, financial and risk management service initiatives.
Doug will also join Angela Gray, of Gray & Gray and Associates Certified Public Accountants, P.C, in a session on nonprofit governance, covering formation and continuation from a legal and financial perspective. This session will be followed by a panel of area nonprofit leaders, providing lessons learned from director to board member and volunteer. After a networking break, Diane Leonard, from DH Leonard Consulting and Grant Writing Services, LLC will present on grant readiness. The final panel will include all of the speakers, and focus on legal and financial advice for managing staff, volunteers and interns.
